Arlington View, known as Johnson's Hill in the early 1700s, was a farm that was divided into four parts, three of which were sold to former slaves in the late 1800s. The northwest corner parcel was bought by the Gray family, descendants of whom live in the community today. On the land Harry Gray built the first brick town home in Arlington, which still stands. What grew around it was a predominately black, middle-class neighborhood.Washington Post
Harry Gray's House
PLAQUE:
Harry W. Gray was born into slavery at Arlington House, where he learned to work with brick and stone. He built this two-story red brick townhouse in 1881 on an original ten acre homestead. The design was based on homes he had seen in Washington, D.C. It is a rare example of an early townhouse form built in Arlington. The Harry W. Gray House is a designated Arlington County Landmark.
Washington Carver Park and Apartments
Prominent African American Albert I. Cassell designed the Washington Carver garden apartments, an architectural type dominant in mid-twentieth century Arlington County and throughout the United States. The Carver Apartments have been a wholly African American owned and occupied cooperative since the residents bought the complex in 1949.
Carver Community Center
Carver Community Center is next to Hoffman Boston School. In addition to a variety of indoor sports, it includes a six-acre park with sports courts and fields along with a playground.
